A note from the President
Mike Stephens
Knife River
We had our 2012 WVHBA Officer Installation & Awards Dinner on Jan 12th. We would like to share a copy of the Installation acceptance speech from our New President, Mike Stephens:
“Good evening and welcome to our 2012 Installation Dinner.
This is like déjà vous all over again.
I stood before you in 2009 giving an acceptance speech for this same job. We were in the middle of a financial crisis and I was questioning my sanity. The bright spot was our dedicated Board of Directors. They did, and still do run this outfit. We didn’t always agree and that is a good thing, but we always came to a consensus and that is a wonderful thing. And, as you can see, we are still alive and kicking. But, enough about old stuff.
I am excited about the level of enthusiasm within our leadership team. We want 2012 to be our best year ever. We promise to make your association more visible socially and politically. But most of all, we are going to make it even more fun. Right Shawna?
We have lots of scheduled events that are designed to bring us closer together as a family. We want you to know each other by name, without the use of nametags. We want the newest members to feel welcome and at ease. We want our senior members to give freely, their years of knowledge. There is a tremendous reservoir of untapped experience in these people. It’s been said that the greatest compliment you can give a man or woman is to ask them to teach you their craft. I believe that to be true. We have lots of committees. In fact, there are committees we haven’t even thought of, and if you have an idea for one, hold your nose and jump in. The water’s fine.
You have my word that I will lead with what I call the Big 3. Integrity, Honesty and Accountability. I will always be open to anything that doesn’t violate these guidelines. Ask me about anything and I will give you an answer, even if it’s “I don’t know”.
I have grown on a personal level since 2009 but some things are still the same. I am clueless about Roberts Rules of Order. I will be leaning on Walt and staff to help me muddle through.
In closing I would like to thank you Tony Nova for your term as 2011 President.
I thank you, Bill Higby for happily and joyfully agreeing to be my Vice President.
Thank you Nancy Whitley and NW Natural for this wonderful facility.
Welcome new and seasoned Board Members. Some are more seasoned than others………
I would like to thank the amazing Jerry Running. She tirelessly runs our office and Plan Center. She defines customer service.
I would also like to thank Shawna Warner, our Executive Officer, Events Dreamer Upper and all around good gal.
Lastly, I would like to sum up by thanking my family, whom I love more than I can put to words.
To Knife River, who has unwaveringly supported our membership and my years of service to this great organization.
And last, but certainly not least, the membership, for entrusting me with this position, and for putting up with me in general.
Thank you.”
